Answer:

A complex ion is a metallic ion surrounded by several molecules that bond to it with a kind of co-valent bond. To explain this a little more, think about iron, for example. It has three electrons in its outer shell of electrons which are loosely bound and therefore lost easily to form the Fe(+3) ion. But now that this shell is empty, it can use these orbitals to share electrons with certain molecules that are called ligands. Three common examples are water (H20), ammonia (NH3), and the Chloride ion (Cl[-1]).

Explanation:

A complex ion is a polyatomic cation (positive charge) or anion (negative charge) consist of a central metal ion with other groups bonded to it

As an example, transition elements form numberous complex ions such as

♦ Tetraaminecopper (II), [Cu(NH3)4]^2+

♦ Hexaaquocobalt (II), [Co(H2O)6]^2+

♦ Hexacynoferrate (III), [Fe(CN)6]^-3
