Contact metamorphism is a type of metamorphism which occurs adjacent to intrusive igneous rocks due to an increase in temperature resulting from an intrusion of hot magma into the rock. The metamorphosed zone around an igneous rock is known as the metamorphic aureole.

Contact Metamorphism

Explanation:

  • It is also known as 'Thermal Metamorphism'.
  • This `metamorphism is caused due to local heating of rocks by the intrusion of  hot igneous bodies nearby.
  • The zone of contact metamorphic  rocks which occurs surrounding the intrusion is called "aureole".
  • As temperature decreases away from the intrusion, the outer rocks in the aureole are less intensely metamorphosed than that of innermost rocks.
  • Thus, depending upon the degree of alteration, the rocks in the aureole can be divided into concentric zones.
  • In contact metamorphism, heat plays a major role and its general effect is to promote recrystallization.
  • Contact metamorphic rocks does not show schistosity.
