Answer:

Continental drift was a theory that explained how continents shift position on Earth's surface. Set forth in 1912 by Alfred Wegener, a geophysicist and meteorologist, continental drift also explained why look-alike animal and plant fossils, and similar rock formations, are found on different continents.

The theory of continental drift says that the continents are constantly drifting away from each other.

According to this theory:

  • All the continents were one single continental mass called  Pangaea.
  • The earth’s crust is made up of many sections called tectonic plates. The continents are located on these plates, which are always moving around.
  • According to this theory, the supercontinent Pangaea began to split some two hundred million years back, into 2 big continental masses known as Gondwanaland and Laurasia forming the southern and northern modules respectively.
  • Later, Gondwanaland and Laurasia continued to break into several smaller continents that exist today.
