Question:-

what is convection?

Answer :-

Convection is the circular motion that happens when warmer air or liquid — which has faster moving molecules, making it less dense — rises, while the cooler air or liquid drops down. Convection is a major factor in weather. ... That current can result in wind, clouds, or other weather.

Convection:

heat transfer by actual movement of molecules of the substance is called convection.

Sea breeze and land breeze:

Sea breeze and land breeze that blow near the coastal areas are examples of convection currents. Sea breeze and land breeze During the day, the land gets heated quickly and the air above it gets warm. This warm air expands and moves upwards, Meanwhile, water takes longer time to heat up, the air above the sea remains relatively cool, This cool air above the sea surface moves towards land to fill the space emptied by the warm air. This flow of cool air from sea towards the land is called sea breeze. At night, the land cools quickly but the sea takes more time to cool and remains hot. So, the air above the land is cooler than the air above the sea. The warm air above the sea surface rises up. The cool air above the land surface moves towards the sea to fill the space emptied by the warm air. This flow of air from land towards the sea is called land breeze.

Applications of convection

Convection has numerous applications in our daily life. Some of the applications are as follows:

  • Air conditioners are installed near the ceiling of the room because they release cool dry air into the room. As cool air is denser, it sinks while the warm air present in the room, being less dense and rises. This process continues and results in effective cooling of the room.

  • Exhaust fans are fitted near the ceiling of the kitchen. They ensure the escape of hot air and gases that rise up.

  • Rising air over the land are used by glider pilots to keep their gliders in the sky.
