The main reason behind launching it was to save the consumers from soaking and aware them about their rights

It was launched by Parliament of India in order to protect interests of consumers in India

COPRA was a major step taken by the government of india on 24th december 1986. COPRA is also known as consumer protection act.copra was the result of consumer movement in the country demanding protection of consumers against malpractices such as adulteration of food, charging more on weighing less products, rampant food shortages, hoarding and all other practices that violate the interests of the consumers.
under copra there is a three tier quasi judicial system
a) district level- handles cases with cclaims upto 20 lakhs
b) state level- handles case with claims from 20 lakhs to 1 crore
c) national level- handles case with claims amounting more than 1 crore
copra has given the consumers the following right-
a) safety is everyone's right
b) right to be informed
c) right to choose
d) right to seek redressal

A major step taken in 1986 by the Indian government was the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act 1986, popularly known as COPRA. Under COPRA, a three-tier quasi- judicial machinery at the district, state and national levels was set up for redressal of consumer disputes. The consumer movement in India has led to the formation of various organisations locally known as consumer forums or consumer protection councils. They guide consumers on how to file cases in the consumer court. On many occasions, they also represent individual consumers in the consumer courts. These voluntary organisations also receive financial support from the government for creating awareness among the people. Thus, the Act has enabled us as consumers to have the right to represent in the consumer courts.
