Hey friend here's your answer :- As the plant grows older protective tissue undergoes certain changes. A strip of meri stem form which replace of epidermis. This is known as Cork. Cells of the Cork are dead compactly arranged without intercellular spaces. The wall of the Cork is thickened with an organic substance called suberin . Suberin makes the cell impermeable to gases and water. Cork is protective in nature and infection and mechanical injury. HOPE IT HELPS YOU!!!
