In biogeography, a taxon is said to have a cosmopolitan distribution if its range extends across all or most of the world in appropriate habitats. Such a taxon is said to exhibit cosmopolitanism or cosmopolitism. The opposite extreme is endemism

A cosmopolitan place has people from many different cultures living there, and all of those cultures are encouraged to publicly celebrate their culture through things such as clothing, food, religious observance, and festivals.

The USA has a long history of immigration, so many places in the USA I consider cosmopolitan, particularly the larger cities. NYC is a fine example. I live in a much smaller Midwest US city, but it's very cosmopolitan here, too. London, UK, as the former seat of a world empire, is also very cosmopolitan.

In contrast, Mexico is not cosmopolitan, at least not where I've visited. I love Mexico! But it's very culturally homogeneous compared to where I'm from. I've never traveled to Japan or Korea, but friends have told me that they're very homogeneous as well.

Cosmopolitanism isn’t easy. Different cultures have different norms for driving, language, manners, public noise, clothing, etc. This can create stress and conflicts. A lot of people are uncomfortable with it, understandably. I love it.
