it is the practice of growing successive crops on the same land chiefly to preserve the productive capacity of the soil
there are 5 major considerations while selecting crops:
1. value as a cash crop
2. or as animal fodder
3. pest and weed control
4. nutritional value
5. labor demands

Sowing more crops instead of one type of crop time is known as crop rotation. and famers select crops according to consumption of water for eg. they sow rice and we all know rice need too much water and because of this soil loose its fertility then they sow sugarcane to gain the fertility of soil.
