the product is scalar 

vector + vector = scalar
eg ;
force *displacement = mechanical advantage

cross product:

The product of two vectors produces a vector then such product is called cross product.

dot product:

The product of two vectors produces a scalar
then such product is called dot product.

difference:

cross product produces a vector but dot product produces a scalar.
