When the information is stored in a tabular format, i.e. the related information is organized in the form of rows and columns such that the required information can be retrieved quickly, is referred as database.
The information represented horizontally along the row in a database is called record, whereas the information displayed vertically along the column is called field. A record represents complete information about an item whereas a field represents only one category of information about all the items. The column headings are called field name, e.g., storing the information in an Address book, the information about one person like his name, last name, address, phone no., e mail, etc. is a record and column-wise information like names or phone numbers of all the persons are called fields.
