Decantation is defined as the separation process in which two immiscible liquids are separated.This is done by pouring out the clear upper layer of liquid. Separation of mixture of oil from water is an example of decantation.

(i) Decantation is used to separate insoluble solids or liquid from liquid.Rain water is a mixture of mud and water. It is purified by decantation.

(ii)Oil and water also get separated by this method because oil floats up.
