The reaction in which a single compound breaks down into two or more than two elements or new compounds is called decomposition reaction. This kind of reactions requires an energy source such as light heat or electricity which breaks the bonds of compounds.

H2O2---------> H2 + O2

This is an example of an Electrolytic decomposition reaction. In this reaction, a single compound H2O2 is broken down into two compounds H2O, O2 using electrical energy.

Types of decomposition reactions:

(i) Thermal decomposition reaction

(ii) Electrolytic decomposition reaction

(iii) Photodecomposition reaction.
