Defection was a practice which was adopted by many MLA's or MP's. When their party didn't win the elections, they used to shift to another party which won in the elections. This practice was a demerit and was needed to be reform and for the that the government made the ANTI- DEFECTION LAW which restricts any party member to change parties and if he/she does that then the seat or the office he/she holds will be taken back i.e. he/she will be suspended.
Hope it helps!!
