Degeneracy of codons is the redundancy of the genetic code, exhibited as the multiplicity of three-base pair codon combinations that specify an amino acid. The degeneracy of the genetic code is what accounts for the existence of synonymous mutations.

When one amino acid is coded by many codes, it is called as the degeneracy of genetic code.

Explanation:

  • The arrangement of nucleotides on DNA which decides the succession of amino acids in a polypeptide chain is named as Genetic code.
  • Degeneracy is considered as one of the "salient features of genetic code" which means that one amino acid is coded by many triplet codons.
  • For example, Amino acid glycine is coded by GGU, GGA, GGC, and GGG whereas Valine is coded by GUU,  GUA, GUC and GUG.
