A democracy is a form of government, wherein people are directly or indirectly (representative democracy) involved in decision making, by electing their representatives. It is a government accountable to its citizens and responsive to their needs, legitimate, not-so-transparent (in matters of sharing information with its citizens). It ensures accomodation of social diversity and freedom (by constitutionally guaranteeing citizen's rights) and dignity of its citizens. It is only a form of government and a way of achieving goals. It is not the solution to all problems.

Explanation:

1. In societies with small population, where all people can gather at one place to make decisions, people directly make decisions.
2. As societies become bigger, all the people are unable  to come at one place to take decisions. So, they elect their representatives to form and run the government by means of elections.
3. The government is accountable (answerable) to its citizens.
4. It should ideally be responsive to the needs of its citizens.
5. Legitimate- it means that the decisions are taken by formal processes and procedures.
6. Democracies all over the world have not shown a very good record on sharing information with its citizens. Hence, it is called a not-so-transparent form of government. However, it is still better than monarchies and dictatorships.
7. Democracies are best suited to accommodate social diversity. Other forms of govt. tend to turn a blind eye towards one group of citizens.
8. The constitution clearly lists the rights of the citizens, therefore, ensuring freedom and dignity of its citizens.
9. It is important to remember that it is not the solution of all problems but only a way of achieving goals. Hence, it is not right to blame democracy as a form of government  for everything wrong that happens.
