Democracy, in modern usage, has three senses—all for a system of government where the citizens exercise power by voting. In a direct democracy, the citizens as a whole form a governing body and vote directly on each issue.

in the most basic sense democracy is a form of government in which the leaders are elected by people. it is originated from the Greek word 'demokratia' where demos mean people and kratia means rule .i.e. people's rule.
there is another definition given to us by Abraham Lincoln which is- democracy is a form of government that is for the people by the people and of the people.
