detergents are sodium salts of long chain sulphonates such as benzene sulphonic acid that contain sulphonic acid group instead of carboxylic acid group..they have similar structures to that of soap..they are called soapless soaps because they behave like soaps in having cleaning properties but they do not contain the usual soaps like sodium salts of fatty acid..like soaps they have also two ends...one is the water repelling part that is hydrophic part which is attached with the dirt on the clothes while the other part is the ionic part which is water atracting called the hydrophilic part..the two ends surround the dirt on the clothes and form micelles and gets washed away with water...detergent are more useful than soaps because they can be used even in hard waterand they have stronger cleaning action than soaps..
