People who have kidney disease and those whose kidneys do not function properly have to under go dialysis. Usually, the kidneys filter the blood, removing harmful waste and excess fluid, turning these into urine to be passed out of the body. When the kidneys stop working a machine does this job whilst the kidneys rest and recover or whilst a transplant donor is being found.

The most common type of dialysis is called Haemodialysis. During the procedure, a tube is attached to a needle in the patients arm. Blood passes along the tube and into an external machine that filters it, before it's passed back into the arm along another tube. This is a long term solution not a quick fix, it is usually carried out 3 days a week, with each session lasting around 4 hours. If a suitable donor can’t be found the patient will have to undergo dialysis for the rest of their life.
