In most situations I’ve seen, acting is a long, long period of working at something else while attempting to get parts in paying gigs as an actor, hence the many who wait tables or work retail part time in order to have the time flexibility to attend calls and compete for occasional acting work. There are lots of stories of people who ‘become overnight sensations’ in acting after 10 or 20 years of hard work and then there are a very few who luck into a big hit in their teens or early 20s (some of whom never do another successful thing, but motor on anyway). For many acting seems either like a calling or a family business (following in parental footsteps) rather than a job with 9–5 sorts of responsibilities (and income). So one huge factor will be lifestyle, choosing which you prefer rather than anything to do with the work.
