Rare medium has the low density and the dense medium has the high density. In case of air and water, water has the high density than that of air. So air is rarer and water is denser.

denser medium means in the surface of the earth there are two layer the medium which cold is denser and the medium which is hot in temperature is rarer medium and in sea it is opposite and it is not the exact diagram
