Eutrophication is the process in which excessive growth of algae ( commonly called algal bloom) occurs as a result of extra loading of nutrients in the water body.

Harmful effects:

1) After their excessive growth, the algae subsequently die and aerobic decomposers become active. They rapidly consume the dissolved oxygen of the water and decompose the dead algae.

2) In the absence of dissolved oxygen, all the aquatic life (including fishes) in the water body die. Thus, Eutrophication deprives us of one of our sources of food.
