Glycogenolysis and Gluconeogenesis are two types of processes occurring in the liver to release glucose into blood.Glycogenolysis, as name specifies is the breakdown of glycogen to release glucose molecules. Glycogen in the muscle cells and liver cells is broken down under the influence of the hormones namely, glucagon and adrenaline.Gluconeogenesis is the process which results in the formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources. It occurs in liver cells consuming more amount of ATP. Gluconeogenesis involves breakdown of proteins stored in the muscles to release amino acids. Amino acids inturn are used in the generation of glucose molecules. Lipids get hydrolysed into glycerol and fatty acids. Glycerol is used to produce glucose molecules. Fatty acids do not form the substrates to form glucose in the process of gluconeogenesis.
