hypotonic solution
if the medium surrounding the cell has higher water concentration than the cell, such a solution is called hypotonic solution and thus the cell swells up this is called endosmosis
hypertonic solution
if the medium has lower water concentration of water than the cell, the water starts coming out of the cell into the surroundings.such a solution is called hypertonic solution
and in this the cell shrinks (called plasmolysis) this is known as exasomosis

A hypotonic solution is one in which the concentration of solutes is greater inside the cell than outside of it, and a hypertonic solution is one where the concentration of solutes is greater outside the cell than inside it.
