- Simply put, a layer 3 switch can forward packets between different networks like a router while layer 2 switches forward packets to different segments/or within a given network. Layer 2 is generally hardware i.e. mac address "routing" or mac tables. Layer 3 has to do with ip's.
- Switching operates at Layer 2 of the OSI Reference Model, where data packets are redirected to a destination port based on MAC addresses. So Layer 2 switches simple do switching. A Layer 3 switch, on the other hand, is a specialized hardware device used for routing data packets using IP addresses.
- The main difference between Layer 2 and Layer 3 is the routing function. That means, a Layer 3 switch has both MAC address table and IP routing table, and handles intra-VLAN communication and packets routing between different VLANs as well. A switch that adds only static routing is known as a Layer 2+ or Layer 3 Lite.
