protoxylem is formed earlier and is smaller in size unlike metaxylem which is formed later and is larger is size..
on the basis of their distribution PRIMARY XYLEM can be exarch or endarch
in exarch metaxylem towards center hence small pith and in endarch protoxylem towards center hence large pith
