There is one major difference betweena read-only memory (ROM) and a random-access memory (RAM) chip:ROM can hold data without power andRAM cannot. Essentially, ROM is meant for permanent storage, andRAM is for temporary storage.

RAM is random access memory. It is a very high speed volatile memory, i.e it can only store data when the machine is powered. The high speed memory stores a any running applications cache or temporary data which it'll require from time to time, hence the high speed. Ex. Games need their 3D model decoders ready at all times, though this involves the VRAM on the GPU, it's the same thing.
ROM on the other hand, stands for read only memory. As the name states, it cannot be modified by the user. This memory has your motherboard’s BIOS and other useful data stored in it. It's size doesn't matter because the BIOS and POST settings do not need more than 10 MB of space.
