Explanation:

According to speech, in comparison with coma, semicolon has a longer pause. As in:

She likes apple; she likes fruits.

However, coma creates a shorter break. As in:

She likes apple, and several other fruits. Normally, semicolon can be used to create short sentences. As in:

He survived; he escaped; he saved; and he reached home.

Here, the several breaks do not make the different parts a whole sentence, but craft a long pause. Whereas in coma

She bought pencils, pens, scotch tape, a pair of scissors and a hole puncher.

Here, sentences are not formed, whereas, tiny breaks are there.

Various other rules apply to the same concept, but this one is the most conspicuous and handy.
