Hi!

Here's ur answer..

Dipole moments occur due to the difference in electronegativity between two chemically bonded atoms.

Dipole Moment..

Take a example of

C - H and c - cl

In 1st case.. ( i.e) C - H

Carbon has more electronegativity than hydrogen..

in carbon electronegativity - 2.5

in hydrogen it's 2.1

So, Partial positive charge is towards H and partial -ve charge is towards carbon..

( I.e) Non polar [ electronegativity < 0.5]

In 2nd case.. ( i.e) C - Cl

carbon electronegativity - 2.5

Cl electronegativity - 3

So partial +ve charge is towards Carbon and partial -ve charge towards Cl

It's polar... [ ∆electronegativity = 3 - 2.5= 0.5]

( Electronegativity difference is big and also Cl is lot bigger than hydrogen..)

If we consider both the cases we can say C- Cl bond is having more dipole moment than C - H bond..

This is bcoz Dipole moment = Qr

Q refers to charge and r refers to separation of distance..

For bigger atom,Dipole moment will increase..

Hope it helps u!
