A directory or a folder is a location in which files are stored. It can also store other directories with their own files. The files can be of various types. When one directory contains a second directory, the second directory appears as a file of the first directory.

Except for a few special characters, any character can be used to name a directory. There is also no restriction in the name size.

A directory is a file system cataloging structure in computing. It contains references to other computer files and other directories.  Directories are also known as drawers or folders on many computers. They provide relevancy to the traditional office file cabinet or a workbench.

Related files are stored in the same directory. A subdirectory in a hierarchical filesystem is a directory contained inside another directory. They are referred to as a parent and child directory. The top-most directory which does not have a parent is called the root directory.

Directories are treated as a type of file in the Unix systems.
