The separation of visible light into its different colours is known as dispersion.
The visible light, which you may also know as the white light, consists of a collection of component colours.
Due to these component colours that the visible light looks more like white.
When these rays pass through a prism, these component lights are separated and these phenomenon is called dispersion of light.
