A displacement reaction is a reaction in which an atom, or a group of atoms, present in a molecule is displaced by another atom.
For example, iron when added to a solution of copper sulphate displaces copper metal.

A displacement reaction is a type of reaction where an element displaces the other in the reaction. Displacement reaction can be of two types:

  • Single-Displacement reaction - In a single displacement reaction only one element displaces the other in the reaction and this displacement occurs due to the position of that element in the activity series. For example the reaction: Fe+CuSO_4FeSO_4+Cu. In this reaction, iron displaces copper because iron is placed above copper in the activity series.
  • Double-Displacement Reaction - The reaction where the ions of one molecule are exchanged with the other to form a new compound is known as the double displacement reaction. They are also known as the neutralization reaction. A very good example of this reaction is the neutralization reaction. HCl+NaOHNaCl + H_2O. Here, the chlorine ion is exchanged with Na, and OH is exchanged with H.
