A distributary is an offshoot of a main river.

  • Distributaries are formed over a period of time, when due to constant deposition of silt and sediments, the flow of the river gets blocked. This causes the river to change it's course and divide into an offshoot thus, forming a distributary.
  • The formation of distributaries from the main river, results in loss of water volume of the main stream.
  • Distributaries are the main features of a river Delta i.e. before falling off into the sea or any other water body, the main river divides into distributaries, forming a triangular piece of land which is very fertile due to deposition of silt and fertile sediments.
