DNA fingerprinting is a method to distinguish one individual from another on the basis of genes.Every individual has different repeats of a particular sequence. This sequence is called variable number of tandem repeats-VNTRs

The number of repeats of VNTRs varies from one individual to another and this act as genetic identity card.

The DNA sample from blood, semen, hair, skin etc is amplified and separated using gel electrophoresis.

Applications:

DNA fingerprinting can be used to identify criminals.

Disputed parentage can be solved.

Gene bank can be set up.

Border disputes can be solved.

Principle of DNA fingerprinting

1 ) 3,000,000 base pairs of nucleotide that is 0.1% of the genomes are unique in all human being. This uniqueness in the base sequence doesn't only occur in genes but also in repetitive DNA also known as satellite DNA.

2) 1. It is most commonly used as a forensic technique for the investigation.

3). It is also used in clarification of paternity.

4). It is useful as it is easy to distinguish and identify the criminal in the case.

5). In India, there is an urgent need to incorporate some provisions in INDIAN EVIDENCE ACT 1872 and CODE OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE 1973 to make DNA testing admissible in courts.

6) Similarly, there is a need for system up gradation such as training of police personnel, availability of labs and forensic investigators.
