Answer:

DNA recombination technology simply means to change the sequence of the DNA to obtain the desired proteins or to have the desired characters in the organism.

Eg:-

  • In E.coli the gene for insulin is introduced to obtain the artificial insulin for commercial purposes.
  • In Brassica napus the gene for hirudin(anti coagulant present in leech) is introduced.
  • In cotton plant(Bt cotton) the gene of Baccilus thuriengisis is introduced to protect the cotton plant from the pests.
  • Similarly, Bt brinjal is also but is not produced commercially as it contains harmful substances due to the gene from the bacteria mentioned above.

For DNA recombination many vectors are used such as:-

  • Plasmid (Eg:- Ti plasmid from the bacteria Agrobacterium tumefacians (it is mainly for the plants))
  • Cosmids (these are the plasmid having the cos(cohesive site) sequence of the lambda phage which helps in the easy attachment of the plasmid DNA with host DNA)
  • Phagemids (these are the plasmids which have one ori site of its own and one ori site from the M1 bacteriophage)
  • YAC(yeast artificial chromosome) (these molecules are having the desired sequence and the centromere, telomere and some of the sequences of the yeast cells are introduced in the bacteriophage and is then transferred)
  • BAC(bacterial artificial chromosome) (these molecules are similar to the YAC)
  • Microinjection (the desired is introduced in the cells with the help of a microscopic needle)
  • Gene Gun (the desired gene are like fired towards the cells with the help of an apparatus)
  • and many more ways are there
