In the Indian tradition, a rural who did not have a son could adopt a near relative as his son and next heir. The British acquired the right to sanction or refuse such an adoption by a dependent Indian rural. This method of annexation of Indian territories was known as The Doctrine of lapse which was formulated by Lord Dalhousie, governor general of India 1848-1856.
