an increase or decrease in the frequency of sound, light
or other waves as the source and observer move towards or away from each other. The effect causes the sudden change in pitch noticeable in a passing siren as well as the red shift seen by astronomers.

When the source of the waves is moving towards the observer each successive wave crest is emitted from a position closer to the observer than the previous wave. Therefore, each wave takes slightly less time to reach the observer than the previous wave. Hence, the time between the arrival of successive wave crests at the observer is reduced causing an increase in the frequency.

Doppler effect (or doppler shift) is the change in frequency of a wave, for an observer, moving relative to the source of the wave. A common experience of doppler shift is, when a train sounding siren approaches and recedes an observer, the frequency of the sound will be seem to be high as it approaches and low as it passes the observe
