These terms are used in covalent bond formation
Covalent bond is formed when 2 atoms share their valence electrons in order to attain octet or duplet electronic configuration
So when the 2 atoms share 1 electron each or 1 pair of electron is shared then a single bond is formed
If 2 atoms share 2 electrons each or 2 pairs of electrons are shared then double bond is formed as in O2
If the 2 atoms share 3 electrons each or 3 pairs of electrons are shared then a triple bond is formed as in N2
