A double displacement reaction, also known as a double replacement reaction or metathesis, is a type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products.

A displacement reaction is a reaction in which an atom, or a group of atoms, present in a molecule is displaced by another atom. For example, iron when added to a solution of copper sulphate displaces copper metal.

\bold{Double\: Displacement \: Reaction \: :}

In this type of reaction; exchange of ions takes place between compounds to produce new compounds.

i.e.

AB + CD → CB + AD

Example :

1) AgNO_{3} + NaClAgCl + NaNO_{3}

2) Na_{2}SO_{4} + BaCl_{2}BaSO_{4} + 2NaCl

\bold{ Displacement \: Reaction \: :}

In this type of reaction; more reactive element displaces less reactive element from it's compound.

i.e.

A + BC → AC + B

Example :

1) Mg + CuSO_{4}Cu + MgSO_{4}

2) Zn + CuSO_{4}Cu + ZnSO_{4}
