Double fertilization is an event unique to angiosperms(flowering plants).
The pollen tubes formed as a result of germination of pollen grains on the stigma enter the embryo sac where two male gametes are discharged. One of the male gamete fuses with the diploid secondary nucleus to produce the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN) (triple fusion) and the other male gamete fuses with egg cell to form zygote (syngamy). Because of the involvement of two fusions this event is termed as double fertilization.
