In the double-slit experiment, thetwo slits are illuminated by a single laser beam. If the width of the slits is small enough (less than the wavelength of the laser light), the slits diffract the light into cylindrical waves.

The moderndouble-slit experimentis a demonstration that light and matter candisplay characteristicsof bothclassicallydefinedwavesandparticles; moreover, it displays the fundamentally probabilistic nature ofquantum mechanicalphenomena. The original experiment was performed byDavisson and Germerin 1927
