Chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing ions.

Example of electrolysis is the decomposition (breakdown) of water into hydrogen and oxygen by means of an electric current. The same process can be used to decompose compounds other than water.

sinhaaaryan27: We can even use the concept of electrolysis in metallurgy such as electrolytic refining, electroplating and anodizing etc.
