DECOMPOSITION REACTION:

reactions in which compounds split up into two or more simpler substances are known are decomposition reaction.

ELECTROLYTIC DECOMPOSITION REACTION:

when a decomposition is carried out using electricity, it is called electrolytic decomposition reaction.

eg: electrolysis of water:

2H2O (l) -------> 2H2(g) + O2 (g)

Explanation:

Electrolytic Decomposition Reaction:

Electrolysis of Water: The decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen due to the passage of electric current through it is called as the electrolysis of water. ... When electricity is passed through molten sodium chloride, it gets decomposed into sodium and chlorine.

OR

Electrolytic decomposition – The decomposition reaction in which a substance is decomposed in to its constituents by use of electricity. Uses: 1) This reaction is used for the industrial preparation of aluminium, sodium, chlorine etc. 2) This reaction is used in electroplating.
