Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to gain electrons.

Anshika1352: the electrons are not gained ,they are just moved slightly towards the more electronegative element in bond.

the tendency of an atom  to attract the shared pair of electrons towards itself is called the electronegativity of the element.  Fluorine is the most electronegative.
