According to electronic concept oxidation is loss of electron/s and reduction is gain of electron/s. i.e if an element loses electron, it is oxidised and if it gains electron, it is reduced.

In a redox reaction species getting oxidised or reduced is checked by this method.

S + O2 ----> SO2   In this reaction S is losing electrons and is oxidised while O is gaining hence is reduced.

The species getting oxidised is a reducing agent and vice a versa.
