what is Electroplating ????????
Answers
Explanation:
Electroplating is a process that uses an electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coherent metal coating on an electrode. The term is also used for electrical oxidation of anions on to a solid substrate, as in the formation of silver chloride on silver wire to make silver/silver-chloride electrodes. Electroplating is primarily used to change the surface properties of an object (such as abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities), but may also be used to build up thickness on undersized parts or to form objects by electroforming
the process of depositing a layer of a desired metal on another material by the means of electricity is known as electroplating.
for example
if we want to electroplate a spoon with copper . we will connect a copper strip to the anode and the spoon to the cathode and dip both of them in a copper sulphate solution .leave it for about an hour or so.You will observe that the spoon in now having a reddish brown coating on it .
the uses of electroplating can be ,
1) electroplating gold , silver or other expensive metal on a cheap one .
2) iron with nickel ,zinc or chromium to prevent rusting. etc
hope it will help you . I try to keep it as simple as possible .
