Its a complex membrane-lined network of flattened sacs,tubules and vesicles that runs throughout the cytoplasm of eucaryotic cells from plasmalemma to nuclear envelope.

Endoplasmic reticulum was discovered by Porter et al(1945) and Thompson(1945) under electron microscope.
