Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of much branched membranes distributed in the cytoplasm of eucaryotic cells. Branches of the network are double layered forming many tubular structures.

Endoplasmic reticulum is more developed in young cells and concentrated around the nucleus extending up to plasma membrane. On the basis of morphology, endoplasmic reticulum is made up of 3 type of structures as follows:

Cisternae: these are long, flat unbranched sacs running parallel to each other.Vesicles: these are ovate structures.Tubules: these form a net like structure.

Endoplasmic reticulum is either smooth walled or rough. Smooth walled endoplasmic reticulum is without ribosomes on their surface hence don't take part in protein synthesis. Rough endoplasmic reticulum have ribosomes on their surface which take part in protein synthesis. Ribosomes are attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum by riboforins I and II. It is the 60S unit of ribosome which is attached to endoplasmic reticulum.
