Answer:

Endoplasmic Reticulum -

  • The endoplasmic reticulum are tiny tubular structures scattered inside the cytoplasm.
  • The endoplasmic reticulum divides the intracellular space into two distinct compartments that is luminal and extraluminal compartment.
  • The luminal part is inside the endoplasmic reticulum whereas the extraluminal part is the cytoplasm.
  • There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum namely rough endoplasmic reticulum, in short called as, RER and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, in short called as, SER.
  • The endoplasmic reticulum bearing ribosomes on their surface is called a rough endoplasmic reticulum.
  • The endoplasmic reticulum whose surface does not bear ribosomes, and look smooth because of the absence of ribosomes, are called smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
  • The rough endoplasmic reticulum is actively involved in protein synthesis and secretion.
  • The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is a site for lipids synthesis.
