a network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.

It is a large network of single membrane bound tubules and sheets present in the cytoplasm. The ER membrane is a similar in structure to plasma membrane.

There are 2 types of ER :

  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)
  • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)
