Because joule is the scientist who declared that Energy = Work done = Heat produced.

Energy is the capacity to do work. For instance, pushing a box and giving it some kinetic energy. Here, the work done is stored in the form of kinetic energy. Energy cannot be created, it can be transformed from one form to another. This we call Law of Conservation of Energy. Energy can be of two types only : Kinetic energy and Potential energy. All other types fall under these two categories.
